Heavenly King’s Land, Tana Toraja

(For GetAway! Magazine, June'14 Issue)

Who Doesn't Love Legazpi City?

After 40 minutes take off from Manila, I found myself in this beautiful city. The City of Legazpi is the capital of the province of Albay in the Philippines and become one of the Philippines’s most popular tourist destinations. Located on the east of Pacific specially on Albay Gulf.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Albay is the world’s Famous Mayon Volcano. From the moment I step off the plane, the majesty of the Mayon Volcano took over. Its massive structure lies in 6 town and 3 cities in Bicol. Every place I go in the city of Legazpi and other nearby towns, Mayon is visible. Mayon is truly majestic!

Aside from Mayon, Albay province is very rich in historical sites. At the nearby town of Daraga, there is a famous church that left only the bell tower of its church due the great eruption of Mayon on Feb 1814. The ruins of the old church at Casagwa, namely Cagsawa Ruin, has a park with some small shops. When the sun get set it will give a dramatic view of the old church bell tower with the beauty of the volcano.

One of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in the Philippines is the St. Gregory the Great Cathedral , also known locally as the Cathedral of San Gregorio Magno or Albay Cathedral. The first church, which was only a wooden chapel  developed by early Spanish missionaries in 1580’s. It’s easily accessible from all points of the city and most jeepneys ply along Rizal Avenue where the church is located.

The Daraga Church or The Church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria ( Our Lady of the Gate is the crowning glory of blend religious architectural styles Renaissance Gothic and Mexican Baroque in the province of Albay. The church was made mostly of volcanic stones. The best reason to visit the church is due to the stunning view of Mayon. Though I'm not a religious but this place is become my favourite spot in Bicol.

I need to maximize my short stay in Legazpi and visit as fast as I could. I’m just surprise how simple everything seems in Legazpi but this city make me left my heart.
